“The Syrians Are Coming: The Mistos of Alpha” by Margaret Clapham is available now!
On 11th November 1890, the SS Australien docked in the Port of Sydney. Aboard was Michael Misto, an unassisted immigrant travelling to Australia from Port Said in Egypt. Almost 131 years later, in the small town of Alpha in Central Queensland, “Misto’s” can be found engraved into the footpath on Shakespeare St.
Who are the Mistos, and why are they memorialised in this tiny town in Qld’s outback?
